Let \(K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_0})\), where \(p_0\) is a rational prime congruent to \(3\) mod \(4\), and let \(h\) be the class number of \(K\). For a character \(\chi\) of the class group of \(K\) let \(L(s, \chi)\) denote the corresponding Hecke \(L\)-function and \[ Z (t, \chi) = \exp(i\theta(t,\chi)) L(1/2+it, \chi) \] an analogue of the Hardy function, where \(\theta(t,\chi)\) is a real function defined using the data of the functional equation of \(L(s, \chi)\) in such a way that \(Z (t, \chi)\) is real for all (real) \(t\). Given arbitrary characters \(\chi_1, \dotsc, \chi_N\) of the class group of \(K\) and arbitrary real \(a_1, \dotsc, a_N\) consider \[ f(t) = \sum_{j=1}^N a_j Z(t,\chi_j). \] Let \(N_0 (T, f)\) denote the number of zeros of the function \(f(t)\) in the interval \([0,T]\). The authors extend previous results on lower bounds for \(N_0 (T, f)\) to short intervals. They show that for \(H \gg T^{15/16+\varepsilon}\) we have \[ N_0 (T+H, f) - N_0 (T, f) \gg H (\log T)^{2/h}\exp(-c(\varepsilon)\sqrt{\log \log T}) \] for some \(c(\varepsilon)>0\).
