Discontinuous function with continuous second iterate (Q483329)

The authors investigate the structure of discontinuous functions having continuous second iterate. They consider self-mappings of the unit interval \(I=[0,1]\) of the following form \[ f(x)=\begin{cases} f_1(x), &x\in I_1:=[0,x_0),\\ c, &x=x_0,\\ f_2(x), &x\in I_2:=(x_0,1], \end{cases} \] where \(x_0\in (0,1)\) is a point of discontinuity. Three theorems are proved giving necessary and sufficient conditions in order that the second iterate \(f^2\) of \(f\) is continuous, in the three cases of removable, jumping and oscillating discontinuity.
