Let \(L^2(0,\infty)\) be the space of all square Lebesgue integrable functions on \([0, \infty)\). Let \(W \subset L^2(0,\infty)\) be the subspace of all continuously differentiable functions, with derivative locally absolutely continuous on \((0, \infty)\). Write \(Q \subset W\) to denote the subspace of those functions with bounded second derivative. The space of all bounded linear operators on \(L^2[0,\infty)\) is denoted by \(B(L^2[0,\infty))\), and \(B(n) = \{S \in B(L^2 [0, \infty)): \|S\|\leq n\}\). The differential operator is denoted by \(D\); and the second derivative operator is denoted by \(D^2\). For \(S \in B(n)\), let \(U (S) = \sup \{\| Df - Sf\| :f \in W\}\) and \(E(n) = \inf \{U (S) : S \in B(n)\}\). This is in a sense an approximation of operators in \(B(n)\) by the differentiation operator. The authors study such a problem and get interesting results. Further, they study the problem of approximating elements of \(B(n)\) by the second derivative operator on \(Q\). That is, they study the estimate \(\inf\{\sup\{\| D^2 f - Sf \| :f \in Q \, \mathrm{and}\, S \in B(n)\}\}\).
