The main theorem of the paper states that every planar semimodular lattice admits a rectangular lattice extension which is both congruence-preserving and cover-preserving and in which all congruences are principal. The theorem implies that every finite distributive lattice can be represented as the congruence lattice of a rectangular lattice which, in addition, has only principal congruences. This addition therefore improves a similar result obtained by \textit{G. Grätzer} and \textit{E. Knapp} [Acta Sci. Math. 75, No. 1-2, 29-48 (2009; Zbl 1199.06029)].
