Fuzzy rule-based models coming in the form of so-called Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models have assumed a visible position in the realm of system modeling and system control. The most prominent feature of these models is their modularity. Complex nonlinear systems are conveniently captured by a series of local models, which, in virtue of their local character, are quite simple (typically being linear). The \(i\)th rule assumes the following form: \[ \text{if }\theta_1\text{ is }M_{i1}\text{ and }\theta_2\text{ is }M_{i2}\text{ and }\dots\theta_p\text{ is }M_{ip}\text{ then }\dot x(t)= A_ix(t)+ B_iu(t), \] where \(\theta= [\theta_1 \theta_2\cdots\theta_p]\) is a vector of premise (condition) variables, \(x(t)\) is a state vector and \(u(t)\) stands for a control (input) vector. Likewise a controller comes in the form of the rules in which the condition part is a linear function of the state variables, namely for the \(i\)th rule one has \(u(t)= K_i x(t)\) with \(K_i\) being the gain matrix of the state feedback. This monograph pursues this important discipline of fuzzy modeling and augments it by focusing on advanced control by considering an aspect of time-delay and stochastic perturbation. The material is structured into three parts and its organization follows a coherent and logically convincing exposure of the overall material. The introductory chapter offers all required prerequisites by briefly outlining the essence of stability, optimal synthesis of TS fuzzy models and stability analysis of time-delayed systems through the LMI approach. Part I, composed of five chapters, is focused on the analysis and synthesis of TS fuzzy models with time delay embracing problems of stability analysis, robust filtering, distributed filtering and model approximation of discrete time TS fuzzy time delay systems. Part II concentrates on a spectrum of problems of analysis and synthesis of TS fuzzy stochastic systems. Two essential applications covered in Part III (consisting of two chapters) involve fuzzy control of nonlinear electromagnetic suspension systems and nonlinear air-breathing hypersonic vehicles. The monograph is unique in several ways. It offers an interesting and highly relevant combination of the theoretical investigations that are well supported by compelling case studies in which the facet of time delay and perturbations play a visible role. It can serve as a well structured and easy to follow advanced text in fuzzy control with a wealth of illustrative up-to-the point examples. Practitioners can find the material instructive when designing control strategies for advanced control problems. The book could meet the needs of a broad audience addressing the needs of those interested in exploring the main and recent trends of fuzzy control and fuzzy modeling.
