Let \((N,h)\) be a complete Riemannian manifold. If \(u\) is a smooth map from \(S^1\times\mathbb{R}\) to \(N\), one considers the flow \[ \partial_tu=\nabla_x^2u_x+\rho\text{Ric}(u_x,u_x)u_x\text{ for }\rho\in\mathbb{R}^+\,. \] In the special case that \((N,h)\) is Einstein, the flow is an energy conserved system. In flat space, one obtains the vector Airy equation \(u_t=u_{xxx}\). This is closely related to the generalized third order Landau-Lifschitz equation \[ u_t=u_{xxx}+\textstyle\frac32(|u_x|^2u)_x,\quad |u|^2=1\,. \] The authors establish the local existence of the new flow under some assumptions on the Ricci tensor; global results are obtained in the special case that \((N,h)\) is either Einstein or is a certain type of a locally symmetric space.
