    The paper provides an efficient criterion for characterizing compactness of standard one-dimensional singular integrals. The main result of the paper (Theorem 2.21) can be viewed as an analogue of the celebrated \(T(1)\) theorem from [\textit{G. David} and \textit{J.-L. Journé}, Ann. Math. (2) 120, 371--397 (1984; Zbl 0567.47025)]. It characterizes those linear operators \(T\) associated with a standard Calderón-Zygmund kernel that have an extension to a compact operator on \(\mathrm L^p(\mathbb{R})\), \(1<p<\infty\). The three conditions introduced in the text are: {\parindent=0.7cm \begin{itemize}\item[--] compactness of the Calderón-Zygmund kernel, \item[--] the weak compactness condition, \item[--] and the cancellation conditions for \(T(1)\) and \(T^\ast(1)\), defined using \(\mathrm{CMO}(\mathbb{R})\), a certain analogue of the space \(\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb{R})\). \end{itemize}}
