The authors introduce the following geometric property for Banach spaces: Let \(X\) be a Banach space. The unit ball (resp. sphere) of \(X\) is denoted by \(B(X)\) (resp. \(S(X)\)). The dual space \(X^*\) is called \(w^*\) nearly dentable if for any \(x\) in \(X\) with \(\|x\|=1\) and any open set \(V(x)\) which contains the set \(A(x)=\{x^*\in X^*,\|x^*\|=1, x^*(x)=1\}\), we have that the weak star convex hull of the set \(B(X^*)\setminus V(x)\) is the empty set. It is shown (Theorem 10) that if \(X^*\) is a \(w^*\) nearly dentable space, then \(X^*\) has the Radon-Nikodým property if and only if, for any separable subspace \(E\) of \(X\), the set \(A(E,x)=\{x^*\in S(E^*),\, x^*(x)=1\}\) is a separable subset of \(E^*\). It is also shown (Theorem 11) that every \(w^*\) hyperplane of \(X^*\) is approximately compact iff the \(w^*\) closure of any \(w^*\) open subset \(C\) of \(X^*\) is approximately compact and this is equivalent to the fact that \(X^*\) is a \(w^*\) nearly dentable space and the set \(A(x)=\{x^*\in X^*,\, \|x^*\|=1, \, x^*(x)=1\}\) is compact for any \(x \in S(X)\). The authors prove the following result (Theorem 12): Let \(X^*\) be a \(w^*\) dentable space. Then (1) for any \(w^*\) open convex subset \(C\) of \(X^*\), the multivalued metric projector operator to the \(w^*\) closure of \(C\) is upper semicontinuous and (2) for any \(w^*\) hyperplane \(D^*\) of \(X^*\), the metric projector operator to \(D^*\) is upper semicontinuous. In Section 4, examples of \(w^*\) nearly dentable spaces in Orlicz function spaces are given. It is shown that, if any \(w^*\) hyperplane in the Orlicz function space \(L(M)\) is approximately compact, then the function \(M\) satisfies the \(\Delta_2\) condition. In the last section, the authors consider set-valued generalized inverses of an operator \(T\) from a Banach space \(X\) to a Banach space \(Y\), i.e., sets related to the best approximate solutions of the operator equation \(T(x)=y\). In the case when \(X^*\) is a \(w^*\) dentable space, the authors obtain results on the upper (and lower) semicontinuity of the set-valued maps \(T^d: Y\to X\), \(T^d(y)=\{x_0 \in X\mid x_0 \text{ is the best approximate solution of the equation } T(x)=y\}\) and \(D(T^d)=\{y\in Y\mid T(x)=y\text{ has a best approximate solution in } X\}\).
