For a review of the 1st ed. and of the French original see Zbl 0802.35001 and Zbl 0642.35001. The book under review is the final volume of the series of six fundamental ones devoted to the thorough presentation of various problems, methods and structures of modern mathematics that forms the principal mathematical apparatus in a number of fields of physics such as electromagnetism, mechanics, quantum physics, etc. It continues the study of evolution problems started in the preceeding Volume 5 where the Fourier method, Laplace transform, the semigroup method and the fundamentals of the variational methods where considered. The volume consists of 3 chapters (XIX--XXI). Chapter XIX presents the treatment of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations including the stationary situation (Stokes' problem) and the evolutionary equation. The appropriate functional spaces (for the problems considered) are introduced and the existence and uniqueness results are given along with a discussion of the regularity properties of the solutions. Chapter XX describes the numerical methods for evolution problems based on the discretization of space and time and along with the subsequent approximation of the problem under investigation by a discrete scheme. The convergence, consistency and stability of the approximating schemes are studied (and in particular the Lax theorem on the equivalence of convergence and stability is presented). The numerical methods developed are applied to various concrete evolution problems including the first- and second-order in time equations, advection equation, Maxwell's equation and other. The final Chapter XXI provides a thorough and deep treatment of the neutron transport problems modeled by integral and integral-differential equations. Here the reader will find the existence and uniqueness results, the study of the spectral properties of the transport operator, approximations of the neutron transport equation by the diffusion equations along with the detailed analysis of the explicit examples of the stationary and evolutionary transport problems in the whole and half space. The book as well as the whole series can be strongly recommended to post-graduate students and researchers as an outstanding treatise giving a comprehensive picture of the modern mathematical methods in physics and mechanics. For a review of Part V, Evolution problems I, see Zbl 0755.35001 and the review below Zbl 0956.35003.
