Let \(X\) be a locally compact Hausdorff space, and let \(C(X)\) be the set of all continuous real-valued functions defined on \(X\). According to a theorem by \(H\). \textit{Bauer} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 23, 245-260 (1973; Zbl 0262.31005)] the Korovkin closure of a linear subspace \(L\subset C(X)\) consists of all \(f\in C(X)\) for which \(\{h\in L\mid h\leq f\}\neq\emptyset, \{h\in L\mid f\leq h\}\neq \emptyset\) and \[ \sup\{h\in L\mid h\leq f\}=\inf \{h\in L\mid f\leq h\}. \] By applying the Hahn-Banach theorem the authors give a new proof of this result. Furthermore, they use Bauer's theorem to determine the Korovkin closures of certain subsets of \(C(X)\) and to prove the standard Stone-Weierstrass theorem.
