The author gives a nice exposition of recent progress in Kleinian group theory using topological techniques. He discusses four conjectures on Kleinian groups, which would be fundamental for a further development of the Kleinian group theory. The first one is the Ahlfors conjecture. It states that the limit set of a finitely generated Kleinian group either has measure \(0\) or is the entire sphere. The second is Marden's conjecture. It states that for any finitely generated Kleinian group \(G\), the quotient manifold \(H^3 / G\) is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold. The third is the ending lamination conjecture. It states that Kleinian groups are classified completely by the topological types of the quotient manifolds and the end invariants. The last, the Bers-Thurston conjecture states that every Kleinian group is the algebraic limit of geometrically finite Kleinian groups. The author discusses the results of Mostow, Marden, Thurston, Bonahon, Canary, and Minsky, which give the progress in above conjectures for the cases of geometrically finite and infinite groups, and for freely indecomposable Kleinian groups.
