Let \(\varphi_{\lambda}\) be the spherical function defined on a symmetric space \(G/K\), given by \[ \varphi_{\lambda}(g) = \int_K e^{(i\lambda - \rho)(H(gk))}dk \] where \(H(g)\) is the log of the abelian part of \(g\) in the Iwasawa decomposition \(G = KAN\). \(\varphi_{\lambda}\) is naturally defined on the Lie algebra of \(A\) via \(H \rightarrow \varphi_{\lambda}(e^H)\). The author finds an explicit integral representation for this spherical function when \(G/K = SO_0(p,q)/SO(p)\times SO(q)\), and then uses this to extend the spherical function to a tubular neighborhood of the Lie algebra within its complexification. The author also discusses applications of this continuation to the study of the growth of the heat kernel.
