The authors survey the theory of Bernoulli convolutions, which are the probability densities of random sums \(\sum_{n \geq 0} \pm \lambda^n\) for some parameter \(1/2 < \lambda < 1\). The behaviour of this convolution (e.g., absolute continuity) depends on the algebraic properties of \(\lambda\) in a way which is still poorly understood. Recent results on the continuity and smoothness of these measures, and on the dimension of exceptional sets, are given, together with the motivating ideas in the arguments. Several open problems are also posed. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0932.00044].
