Let \(G\) be a finite group with Sylow \(2\)-subgroup \(P\cong C_2\times C_2\), and let \((K,\mathcal O,k)\) be a splitting \(2\)-modular system for the subgroups of \(G\). The authors investigate the finitely generated abelian group \(T(G)\) of endo-trivial \(kG\)-modules. It is known that \(T(G)\cong TT(G)\oplus\mathbb Z\) where \(TT(G)\) is the torsion subgroup of \(T(G)\). Moreover, \(TT(G)\) consists of the classes of indecomposable endo-trivial \(kG\)-modules whose Green correspondents in \(H=N_G(P)\) have dimension \(1\). Now let \(V\) be a \(1\)-dimensional \(kH\)-module, and let \(B\) be the block of \(kG\) containing the Green correspondent \(U\) of \(V\) in \(G\). The authors show that \(U\) lifts uniquely to an \(\mathcal OG\)-lattice affording an irreducible character in \(B\). Moreover, \(U\) is an endo-trivial \(kG\)-module if and only if \(B\) is of principal type and, for \(u\in P\setminus\{1\}\), the unique irreducible Brauer character in the unique (nilpotent) \(2\)-block of \(C_G(u)\) in Brauer correspondence with \(B\) has degree \(1\). (Recall that a block of a finite group \(X\) with block idempotent \(e\) is said to be of principal type if \(\text{Br}_Q(e)\) is a block idempotent of \(C_X (Q)\) for every subgroup \(Q\) of a defect group of \(e\).) If \(G\) is \(2\)-nilpotent then \(TT(G)\cong G/[G,G]\), and if \(G\) is not \(2\)-nilpotent then \(\mathbb Z/3\mathbb Z\) embeds into \(TT(G)\). (More precise results can be found in the paper.)
