In this article the authors describe some relations between the topological properties of a Hausdorff space \(X\) and its Fell hyperspace \((CL(X), \tau_F)\). The text starts with assumptions on the spread and extent of \(X\) that imply that either the Tychonoff plank or an ordinal can be embedded as a closed subspace into the Fell hyperspace of \(X\). These results are then used to prove that Lindelöfness, paracompactess and normality of \((CL(X), \tau_F)\) are all equivalent to the property that the base space \(X\) is Lindelöf and locally compact. Several topological properties that are weaker than the aforementioned ones are studied as well. In the final section the authors show that \(X\) being locally compact and second countable is equivalent to metrizability and hereditary normality of the Fell hyperspace of \(X\).
