The paper is a short survey on 3-dimensional Poincaré duality groups and their relation to topology. A group \(\Gamma\) is an oriented \(\text{PD}(n)\)-group if it has a finite finitely generated projective resolution of the trivial \(\Gamma\)-module \(\mathbb Z\) and if \[ H^i(\Gamma,{\mathbb Z}\Gamma)=\begin{cases} 0, & i\neq n; \\ {\mathbb Z}, & i=n.\end{cases} \] The author shows how classification of PD(3)-groups proceeds in parallel with Thurston's geometrization program in the algebraic setting, discusses 3-dimensional Poincaré complexes with finite fundamental groups and gives an algebraic proof for the classification by \textit{B. Evans} and \textit{W. Jaco} [Topology 12, 83-97 (1973; Zbl 0258.55003)] of infinite solvable groups that appear as fundamental groups of (not necessarily compact) 3-manifolds. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0829.00028].
