Let \(X\) be a topological space. Let the family of closed (respectively open) subsets of \(X\) be denoted by \(\mathcal F\) (respectively \( \mathcal G\)). It is proved that the following conditions are equivalent: (a) \(X\) is a Gruenhage space. (b) \(X\) has a countable cover by sets of small local diameter (property SLD) by \(\mathcal F \cap \mathcal G\) sets. (c) \(X\) has a separating \(\sigma\)-isolated family \(\mathcal M \subset \mathcal F \cap \mathcal G.\) (d) \(X\) has a one-to-one continuous map into a metric space which has a \(\sigma\)-isolated base of \(\mathcal F \cap \mathcal G\) sets. Further, an example is given to show that fragmentability does not imply the property SLD and that the property SLD does not imply that the space to be Gruenhage.
