Braided semigroups are considered, and it is shown that they give rise to solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation in a tensor category. As an application, dynamical Yang-Baxter maps are constructed. As they do not satisfy the unitarity condition, they cannot be obtained from dynamical braces.
