Let: \(\delta > 0\), \(m\) a natural number and \(f \in L_p\) (\(0 < p\leq+\infty\), equipped by the standard norm) a \(2\pi\)-periodic function of \(d \geq 1\) variables. In this paper a new class of moduli of smoothness is introduced. These moduli, which depend on the values of \(m\), \(d\) and \(\delta\), are named \(\omega_{m,d}(f,\delta)\). They are related to the Laplace operator and for some particular values of \(m\) and \(d\) coincide with well known classical moduli. The paper, together with some auxiliary results, contains the basic properties of \(\omega_{m,d}(f,\delta)\), a Jackson-type estimate and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence of these moduli and the polynomial \(K\)-functionals related to the Laplace operator. Moreover, as applications, it gives a Bernstein-type estimate and a theorem which describes the quality of approximation by families of linear polynomials operators generated by Bochner-Riesz kernels in terms of \(\omega _{m,d}(f,\delta)\).
