The purpose of the paper under review is: Given a smooth affine variety \(X\) over \(\mathbb{C}\) to exhibit smooth affine varieties \(Y\) such that \(X \cong Y\) as complex analytic manifolds, but \(X\) and \(Y\) are not isomorphic as algebraic varieties. In this situation, \(Y\) is called an \textit{exotic model} of \(X\). The paper exhibits affine varieties with uncountably many exotic structures in any dimension \(d \geq 2\). For instance the author proves: {Corollary 1.3}: Let \(\Gamma_1,\dots,\Gamma_r\) be a finite collection of smooth affine non-rational curves \((r \geq 1)\) and let \(X=(\prod^r_{i=1} \Gamma_i) \times \mathbb{C}\). Then the Stein manifold has uncountably many different structures of affine variety. in particular for every \(d>1\) there exists a Stein manifold of dimension \(d\) which has uncountably many affine structures of affine variety. Exploiting the smallness of automorphism groups of varieties is a recurring theme in the paper. One of the important ingredients that supports this theme is a generalization of Theorem 3.6 from [\textit{Z. Jelonek}, Math. Ann. 344, No. 4, 769--778 (2009; Zbl 1178.14060)]: {Theorem 2.5}: Let \(X\) be a non-\(\mathbb{C}\)-uniruled smooth affine variety. Let \(\mathbf{F},\mathbf{G}\) be algebraic vector bundles on \(X\) of rank \(r\). In the total spaces of \(\mathbf{F}\) and \(\mathbf{G}\) are isomorphic, then \(\mathbf{F}\) is isomorphic to \(\sigma^*(G)\) for some automorphism \(\sigma \in \mathrm{Aut}(X)\). Thus an isomorphism of the structures on the total space corresponds to an automorphism of \(X\). The Theorem is applied to the total spaces of the line bundles on \(X\). The paper ends by constructing smooth families of exotic structures.
