Denote by \(\mathcal A\) the class of aperiodic monoids with central idempotents. Its subvarieties have been intensively studied by the author, M. Jackson and others in recent years. A subvariety \(\mathbf V\) of \(\mathcal A\) is \textit{inherently nonfinitely generated} (in the context of the paper, \textit{within} \(\mathcal A\)) if it is not contained in any finitely generated subvariety of \(\mathcal A\). Such varieties are characterized in several different ways. In terms of identities, \(\mathbf V\) has this property if and only if it satisfies no `Straubing identity' \(x\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(h_ix)=x^n\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}h_i\). (These identities were introduced by \textit{H. Straubing} [Semigroup Forum 24, 25-38 (1982; Zbl 0503.20024)].) In alternative terms, \(\mathbf V\) has this property if and only if it contains the variety \(\mathbf L\), where \(\mathbf L\) is one of the three `almost Cross' subvarieties of \(\mathcal A\) (see, for instance, the author's [Beitr. Algebra Geom. 54, No. 1, 121-129 (2013; Zbl 1267.20083)]). In the process, the subvarieties of \(\mathbf L\) are determined and shown to form a countably infinite chain.
