In this paper the nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankon (NPZ) model for phytoplankton is proved. The advection-diffusion equation for the phytoplankton density is derived by using the Lambert-Beer light law. The existence of critical depth is proved or there exists a unique nontrivial stationary solution. Finally, it is proved by Sturm-Lioville theory that instabilities result from Hopf-type bifurcations.
