The paper under review presents the local theory of commuting operators belonging to the Cowen-Douglas class. Let us recall the definition of the Cowen-Douglas class. Let \(\Omega\) be an open connected subset of \(\mathbb C^d.\) For a positive integer \(n\), let \({\mathbf B}_n(\Omega)\) denote the set of all commuting \(d\)-tuples \(T\) on \(\mathcal H\) satisfying the following \({\mathbf B}_n(\Omega)\) conditions: {(1)} For every point \(\omega=(\omega_1, \ldots, \omega_d) \in \Omega\), we have \quad {(a)} the map \(D_{T- \omega}(x) = ((T_j-\omega_j)x)\) from \(\mathcal H\) into \(\mathcal H^{\oplus d}\) has closed range; \quad{(b)} \(\dim{\ker({T-\omega})} = n\). {(2)} The subspace \(\bigvee_{\omega \in \Omega} \ker({T-\omega})\) of \(\mathcal H\) equals \(\mathcal H\). It is well known that any \(d\)-tuple in \({\mathbf B}_n(\Omega)\) can be represented as the Hilbert space adjoint of the multiplication \(d\)-tuple \(\mathscr M_z\) on a Hilbert module \(\mathcal M\) (over \(\mathbb C[z_1, \ldots, z_d]\)) of \(\mathbb C^d\)-valued holomorphic functions on \(\Omega\). In this paper, the authors identify and study the \(k\)th order localization of tuples in \({\mathbf B}_n(\Omega)\) on an analytic hypersurface \(Z\) (e.g., the zero set of a holomorphic function) in \(\mathbb C^d.\) Here, the \textit{\(k\)-order localization of Cowen-Douglas \(d\)-tuple \(T\) on \(Z\)} is given by the \(d\)-tuple \({\mathscr M^*_z}|_{\mathcal M_k}\), where for a positive integer \(k\), \(\mathcal M_k =\{f \in \mathcal M : f = \phi^k g\) for some \(\mathbb C^d\)-valued holomorphic function \(g\) and \(\phi\) is a local defining function for \(Z\}^{\perp}\). One of the main results in this paper completely determines unitary equivalence of the localization. Among many other results, the authors identify the localization with an important class of quotient Hilbert modules.
