This graduate-level textbook presents models of rods and strings obtained by using balance laws. Thus, the theory is presented by classical balance laws with the addition of balance of material momentum introduced by the author in [Contin. Mech. Thermodyn. 18, No. 6, 361--365 (2007; Zbl 1170.74305)]. Many applications are presented, mechanical and biomechanical, including steadily moving strings, ribbon-like models for DNA, an elastica arm scale, and a series of problems with chains subjected to shocks and impact. A number of the presented examples come from the author's own research. The presentation is clear and easy to follow. The book is divided into three parts. In the first part, ``Mechanics of string'' (Chapters 1, 2, 3), the author presents basic continuum mechanical concepts of string. The second part, entitled ``Mechanics of rods'' (Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7) describes in detail the classical and generalized rod theories. Finally, the third part, entitled ``Background material'' (Chapters 8, 9), reviews some elements of continuum mechanics and mathematics. The book, whole or some parts of it, could be used as a basis for graduate course on mechanics of rods and strings. It will introduce students, especially those who are research-oriented, into modern theories. I believe that the book under review is an important addition to the subject, and I strongly recommend it to students and researchers in continuum mechanics, especially in the field of rods and strings.
