The authors investigate austere submanifolds in \(\mathbb CP^n\). It is known that the cotangent bundle of any compact rank-one symmetric space can be endowed with a Ricci-flat Kähler metric, called the Stenzel metric. An arbitrary submanifod \(M\subset\mathbb CP^n\) is said to be austere if its conormal bundle \(N^\ast M\) is special Lagrangian in \(T^\ast\mathbb CP^n\), with respect to the Stenzel metric. The authors obtain conditions on the second fundamental form of \(M\) that are necessary and sufficient for \(M\) (of real dimension \(k\)) to be austere. This result implies that if \(M\subset\mathbb CP^n\) is an arbitrary complex submanifold then \(M\) is austere. Finally, the authors classify the austere surfaces in \(\mathbb CP^n\), showing that they must be either holomorphic curves or totally geodesic.
