The problem of providing sufficient conditions for a rational map between projective spaces to be birational has attracted much interest in the past and is still an active area of research. An effective birationality criterion of such maps in terms of the \textit{Jacobian dual matrix} is given in [\textit{F. Russo} and \textit{A. Simis}, Compos. Math. 126, No. 3, 335--358 (2001; Zbl 1036.14005); \textit{A. Simis}, J. Algebra 280, No. 1, 162--179 (2004; Zbl 1067.14014)] and including arbitrary characteristic in [\textit{A. V. Doria} et al., Adv. Math. 230, No. 1, 390--413 (2012; Zbl 1251.14007)]. In the paper under review, the authors consider rational maps whose source is a product of subvarieties, each one being embedded in a projective space. They call these maps as \textit{bigraded rational maps}. The main purpose of the paper is to find criteria for a bigraded rational map to be birational. A general criterion is given for bigraded rational map to be birational in terms of the rank of two Jacobian dual matrices, which is actually an analogue of the Jacobian dual criterion for rational maps between varieties embedded in projective spaces mentioned above. The authors study in detail bigraded rational maps from \(\mathbb P^1 \times \mathbb P^1\) to \(\mathbb P^2\) of very low bidegrees. They obtain very simple birationality criteria in bidegrees \((1,1), (1,2)\) and provide a complete list of possible birational maps of bidegree \((2,2).\) Moreover, applications of these results to the field of geometric modeling are given.
