This book is devoted to the analysis and design of stabilizing sliding mode control schemes for nonlinear systems described by ordinary differential equations, subject to uncertainties, disturbances, time-delay and coupling effects among subsystems. Higher order sliding mode techniques are not considered. Uncertainties acting on the systems are often unknown but bounded by known functions. Disturbances can be unmatching and the nominal systems can be non-minimum phase. The control laws which are proposed in this book are often obtained by a two-steps procedure. First, a suitable switching surface is found such that the corresponding reduced order system has the desired performance. Then, a sliding mode controller is developed, driving the system to the sliding surface and maintaining a stable sliding motion. The known bounds on the uncertainty can be employed in the control design. Several cases are considered in the book for analysis and design, as follows. Static output feedback variable structure controllers are designed to obtain global stability. Then, a decentralized strategy is proposed for a class of nonlinear large-scale interconnected systems. Dynamical output feedback controller design is considered for nonlinear systems using sliding mode techniques. Control design for large-scale interconnected systems is presented using reduced-order compensators. Two chapters are devoted to nonlinear time-delay systems (only state-delay is considered). Delay dependent or independent output feedback control is presented. If the time-delay is known, static output feedback control and reduced-order observer-based control are investigated via sliding mode techniques. If the time-delays are unknown, local stabilization results are obtained using state output feedback control. Approaches for robust fault estimation and reconstruction for nonlinear systems are presented based on a sliding mode observers. Application of decentralized sliding mode control to multimachine power systems is considered using only output informations. Each chapter of the book contains significant case studies and examples which are discussed in detail. An evaluation of advantages and weakness of the proposed control schemes is presented, along with a comparison with different control strategies. The behavior of complex control systems presented in this book is considered from the point of view of both theoretical approach and practical applications.
