The class of Lebesgue measurable functions on the real line \(\mathbb{ R}= (-\infty,\infty)\) is denoted by \({\mathcal L}\), and for \(1\leq p<\infty\), \(L^p(\mathbb{ R})\) denotes \(\{[f]: \|[f]\|_p=\| f\|_p<\infty\}\), where \([f]\) is the equivalence class of functions which differ from \(f\) on sets of measure \(0\) and \[ \| f\|_p= \Biggl(\int_{\mathbb{R}}|f(x)|^p\,dx\Biggr)^{1/p}. \] If \(({\mathcal X},\|\cdot \|_{{\mathcal X}})\) is a Banach space of functions on \(\mathbb{ R}\) with norm \(\|\cdot \|_{{\mathcal X}}\) such that \(\tau_a(f)\in{\mathcal X}\), and \(fh\in{\mathcal X}\) if \(f\in{\mathcal X}\), \(h\in{\mathcal X}\), where \(\tau_a(f)(x)= f(x+a)\), \(a\in{\mathcal X}\), then the difference operator \(\Delta_a\) is defined on \({\mathcal X}\) by \(\Delta_a(f)(x)= f(x+a)-f(x)\). The main results of this paper relate to the assertion that the statements (i) \(\Delta_a(f)\in{\mathcal X}\) and \((\sin ab\cdot)f \in {\mathcal X}\), and (ii) \(f\in{\mathcal X}\), are equivalent if and only if \(ab\neq 2m\pi\), \(m= 0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\pm 3,\dots\). Other statements of the paper indicate that similar results may be derived for functions defined on the Euclidean space \({\mathbb R}^n\). (Note: Since \(\Delta_a\{\exp (ib\cdot)f(\cdot)\}(x)= f(x+a)e^{ib(x+a)}-f(x) e^{ibx}= \{f(x+a)-f(x)\} e^{ib(x+a)}+ f(x)(1-e^{-iab}) e^{ib(x+a)}\), the second condition of requirement, (i) is equivalent to replacement of \(f(x)\) by \(f(x)e^{ibx}\) in the first requirement.)
