This paper is concerned with the study of stable equilibria for stationary solutions to \[ u_t=\epsilon^2 \operatorname{div}[k(x)\nabla u]+f(x,u),\quad (t,x)\in {\mathbb R}_+\times \Omega, \] \[ \partial u_\nu u(t,x)=0,\quad \quad (t,x)\in {\mathbb R}_+\times \partial\Omega, \] where \(\Omega\subset {\mathbb R}^n\), \(n\geq 1\) is a smooth and open set, \(k\in C^1(\Omega)\). Assuming that the roots of \(f(u,x)=0\) contact or intersect each other along a non-smooth hyper surface, the authors use the variational concept of \(\Gamma\)-convergence to obtain existence, stability and further investigate the geometric structure of four classes of stationary solutions to the above problem.
