The notion of locally quasi-convex group was introduced by \textit{N. Ya. Vilenkin} [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 15, 439--462 (1951; Zbl 0044.25902)]. The paper under review provides several results and examples about Mackey topologies on locally quasi-convex topological abelian groups. The main result is Theorem A in which is stated that if \(G\) is an abelian group then every metrizable locally quasi-convex topology is the Mackey topology if and only if \(G\) is bounded. A result of \textit{N. T. Varopoulos} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 60, 465--516 (1964; Zbl 0161.11103)] is mentioned about metrizable Mackey topologies in the class of locally precompact abelian groups and a result of \textit{M. Barr} and \textit{H. Kleisli} [Theory Appl. Categ. 8, 54--62 (2001; Zbl 0965.22004)] about Mackey topologies on nuclear groups in the sense of Banaszczyk.
