This book treats the theory of seismic waves by using various models of elastic media, and gives analytical and numerical solutions for problems with boundary conditions prescribed at two-dimensional domains, applying the boundary integral equation method (BIEM) and Fourier-Laplace and Radon transforms. The book covers the state-of-the-art of the BIEM in the field of elastodynamics and can be considered a useful reading for researchers and graduate students in seismology. The text is organized in eleven chapters grouped in three parts, with an extensive list of references at the end of each chapter. Chapter 1 is introductory and explains the subject of the book with historical background of work done in the field of seismic waves in non-uniform and heterogeneous elastic media. Chapters 2--6 are elements of Part I covering the general 2D theory describing elastodynamics of seismic waves in non-uniform, isotropic and anisotropic, and heterogeneous elastic media. Here one finds details of the applied computational method, a formulation of an elastodynamic problem and its governing equations, specific cases (the anti-plane and in-plane), model boundary conditions, and the half-plane Green's function method. Part II comprises Chapters 7--8 and deals with anti-plane shear waves propagating in inhomogeneous and heterogeneous regions of finite and infinite extent. This includes numerical solutions for shear wave propagation and wave scattering in planes with cracks and cavities, analyses, comparison and verification of the obtained numerical results, and their use in some practical civil engineering applications. Part III with Chapters 9--11 deals with numerical solutions of problems related to the in-plane wave propagation in inhomogeneous and heterogeneous, bounded and unbounded, regions. Among other things, here one finds analytical and numerical treatments of wave scattering by cracks, the wave path inhomogeneity and its relation to amplifying seismic local effects.
