The book describes the genesis of fluid dynamics for the years 1640--1780. This is the time before the Navier Stokes equation which appeared in 1822 and 1845. The book concentrates on fluids dynamics in the presence of obstacles and the problem of discharge. Problems in hydraulics, pumps, turbines, ballistics are also studied. The theoretical foundations concentrate on the contributions of Daniel Bernoulli, Johan Bernoulli, Jean Le Rond D'Alembert, Alexis Claude Clairaut and Leonhard Euler, but the contributions of Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Edmelé Mariotte are also featuring prominently. The controversies, conflicts and critisims between the different researchers are also highlighted. The different experiments at these times such as Mariotte's experiments, Hyugen's experiments, Daniel Bernoulli experiments, experiments of Borda, Chapman's experiments are explained in detail. In chapter 9 the Euler equation and the continuity equation are derived. The reader will also appreciate the illustrations in the book such as Smeaton's machine, machine of the London bridge, Robin's rotating apparatus, Segner Euler turbine. This is a book to read for everyone involved in hydrodynamics. The engineers, mathematicians and historians will benefit from this book.
