The Erdős-Trost problem can be stated as follows: If a triangle is inscribed in another triangle, then at least one of the areas of the outer three triangles is less than or equal to the area of the inner triangle. The authors investigate the problem from an axiomatic point of view and show that it can be formulated and holds true in ordered translation planes. They also show that it does not hold true in Hilbert planes in which the sum of the angles of any triangle is less than \(\pi\).
