Eisenstein integrals play a fundamental role in harmonic analysis on reductive groups and symmetric spaces. These are explicit integrals which occur as matrix coefficients of induced representations. In the present paper, two different notions of Eisenstein integrals by Harish-Chandra and the first author respectively, are generalized to a common notion of minimal Eisenstein integral for symmetric spaces. It is hoped that this new notion is better suited for applications like the theory of cusp forms on symmetric spaces.
