This book presents a new type of switched model for the spread of infectious diseases. Time-varying contact rates and time-varying incidence rates are featured in the proposed framework of the compartmental epidemiology models. Both basic mathematical theory (i.e., stability theory of ordinary and functional differential equations) and application-oriented results are provided in this four-chapter monograph. This book should be useful and attractive for students and researchers seeking updated progresses in the field of epidemic modeling as {\parindent=8mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] it introduces techniques from switched system theory to study the stability of epidemic models; \item[(ii)] some practical aspects such as seasonality are factored in; and \item[(iii)] the influence of abrupt changes in model parameters or function forms on control schemes is investigated. \end{itemize}} The book is organized in a comprehensive way. Necessary theory on ordinary differential equations and switched systems is provided in Part I. The classic SIR model and its numerous variants are adopted in Part II to demonstrate the switched systems formation of epidemic models. Part III investigates the application of control strategies to switched epidemic models, including continuous, switching control, and impulsive control. A case study of Chikungunya outbreak in RĂ©union is also examined. Conclusions and some future directions are given in Part IV.
