Let \((M,g)\) be a compact 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. Let \(\Delta\) be the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The authors extend previous work of \textit{M. D. Blair} and \textit{C. D. Sogge} [``Concerning Toponogov's theorem and logarithmic improvement of estimates of eigenfunctions'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1510.07726}], \textit{X. Chen} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 367, No. 6, 4019--4039 (2015; Zbl 1318.58015)], \textit{X. Chen} and \textit{C. D. Sogge} [Commun. Math. Phys. 329, No. 2, 435--459 (2014; Zbl 1293.58011)], \textit{C. D. Sogge} and \textit{S. Zelditch} [in: Advances in analysis. The legacy of Elias M. Stein. Proceedings of the conference ``Analysis and applications'' held in honor of the 80th birthday of Elias M. Stein, Princeton, NJ, USA, May 16--20, 2011. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press. 447--461 (2014; Zbl 1307.58013)], and others by showing: Theorem. There exist positive constants \(C=C(M,g)\) and \(\lambda_0=\lambda_0(M,g)\) so that if \(\gamma\subset M\) is any geodesic segment which has total length 1 and if \(\Delta e_\lambda=\lambda^2e_\lambda\) is any eigenfunction of the Laplacian for \(\lambda>\lambda_0\), then: \smallbreak\noindent 1. If \(M\) has nonpositive scalar curvature, then \[ \|e_\lambda\|_{L^4(\gamma)}\leq C\lambda^{\frac14}(\log\log\lambda)^{-\frac18}\|e_\lambda\|_{L^2(M)}\,. \] \smallbreak\noindent 2. If \(M\) has constant negative scalar curvature, then \[ \|e_\lambda\|_{L^4(\gamma)}\leq C\lambda^{\frac14}(\log\lambda)^{-\frac14}\|e_\lambda\|_{L^2(M)}. \] The first estimate follows from an improved local restriction estimate and by interpolating using results of \textit{J.-G. Bak} and \textit{A. Seeger} [Math. Res. Lett. 18, No. 4, 767--781 (2011; Zbl 1271.42014)]. The second estimate in constant negative curvature is proved by lifting the calculations to the hyperbolic plane and using the Poincaré half plane model.
