Let \(G\) be a profinite group. If \(G\) is covered by countably many closed subgroups, then by the Baire category theorem, at least one of the subgroups is open. The remark above lead the author to the following theorems. Theorem 1.1. (1.2.) For a profinite group \(G\), the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(G\) is covered by countably many abelian (nilpotent) subgroups; (2) \(G\) has finite commutator subgroup (\(G\) is finite-by-nilpotent); (3) \(G\) is central-by-finite (there exists \(m \in \mathbb{N}\) such that \(Z_{m}(G)\) is open). Theorem 1.3. Let \(G\) be a profinite group. The following conditions are equivalent: (1) the set of all commutators in \(G\) is covered by countably many nilpotent subgroups; (2) \(G'\) is finite-by-nilpotent; (3) there exists \(m \in \mathbb{N}\) such that \(Z_{m}(G')\) is open in \(G'\).
