The definition of a Colombeau algebra of generalized functions is usually given as a quotient of moderate modulo negligible sequences of smooth functions, where both moderateness and negligibility are expressed in terms of asymptotic estimates with respect to a regularization parameter \(\varepsilon\). In the standard version of the theory, these estimates are polynomial (or inverse polynomial) in \(\varepsilon\). In previous work, the authors introduced the notion of an asymptotic gauge, which allows to introduce in a consistent way other types of asymptotics into Colombeau's theory. This has advantages when solving differential equations in this setting, as it allows to pick appropriate asymptotics for the problem at hand. In the paper under review, the authors take this approach one step further and study the categorical properties of Colombeau algebras with respect to the choice of asymptotic gauge. In particular, they obtain functorial descriptions for the analysis of differential equations within this general scheme.
