The monograph deals with fault detection and isolation issues with an emphasis on computational algorithms. The presentation is focused on the linear deterministic synthesis methods for the solved problems using both frequency domain concepts and time domain based reliable computational procedures. The book contribute in overcoming the gap between the exiting theoretic results and the area of well-developed computational synthesis methods. It possesses the following features: (1) Solved standard synthesis problems in the most general setting; (2) Focus on the usage of the best numerical algorithms; (3) Development of general synthesis procedures based on new computational schemes; (4) Availability of a set of free accompanying software for descriptor systems in MATLAB. The book consists of Preface, Contents, Acronyms, Notation and Symbols, List of Figures, List of Tables, Part I (Chapters 1-4), Part II (Chapters 5--8), Part III (Chapters 9--10), Bibliography, and Index. Part I -- Basics of Fault Diagnosis serves as an introduction to the topic. Chapter 1 is introductory. Chapter 2 presents the standard forms of LTI models used for the synthesis of fault detection filters for both input-output and state-space representations. In Chapter 3, the main features of the fault diagnosis issues, such as residual generation and evaluation, the basic fault detectability and isolability concepts, the solvability conditions for the solution of six ``canonical'' problems for exact and approximate synthesis of fault detection filters, and the selection of appropriate thresholds for decision making, are formulated. In Chapter 4, the model detection issues are considered. It includes the generation of a structural set of residuals, the concept of model detectability, exact and approximate model detection problems, and selection of thresholds for decision making. Part II -- Synthesis of residual generators presents methods for the synthesis of residual generators based on the nullspace method. In Chapter 5, the problems of exact fault detection and approximate fault detection formulated in Chapter 3 are solved. Chapter 5 is the central part of the book. The exact model detection problem as well as the approximate model detection problem both formulated in Chapter 4 are systematically synthesized in Chapter 6. In Chapter 7, the computational aspects of the presented procedures are discussed with the focus more on an informative description than on numerical algorithms. A common framework of all synthesis procedures is the usage of updating techniques of different representation forms of fault detection filters. Chapter 8 presents two case studies related to monitoring flight actuator faults and monitoring air sensor data faults. Part III -- Background material covers a substantial amount of necessary knowledge on advanced system theoretical concepts and specialized computational algorithms. Chapter 9 presents the basic concepts and results on rational and polynomial matrices and also descriptor systems to facilitate the understanding of the mathematical terminology used throughout the book. Chapter 10 deals with the main algorithms for descriptor systems in detail. The core computations in these algorithms include several matrix decompositions and condensed forms. They are obtainable using orthogonal transformations. Thus, they result in numerically stable computational algorithms for the solution of generalized matrix equations frequently used in the area of control and fault detection (Lyapunov, Stein, Sylvester, Riccati). A collection of software tools is freely available in the SLICOT subroutine library or as MATLAB functions accompanying the book. The monograph presents a well written and systematically organized text focused on understanding and the capability of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control. The book bridges the gap between the existing theoretical results and general reliable computational synthesis procedures for LTI deterministic systems. Software implementations for descriptor systems are available. The software tools allow easily the computations of all presented synthesis procedures. The book will be useful to advanced graduate students, researchers and applied mathematicians interested in this emerging area.
