This textbook is devoted to some major topics in functional analysis. It covers several basic fields, including elementary properties of Banach and Hilbert spaces, but also the main theorems of functional analysis and spectral theory. Applications of the abstract results are mainly oriented to differential, partial differential and integral equations, wavelets, compressed sensing, optimization, variational inequalities, and variational principles. The contents of this book is divided into 15 chapters around topics of central interest, as follows: 1.~Banach contraction fixed point theorem; 2.~Banach spaces; 3.~Hilbert spaces; 4.~Fundamental theorems; 5.~Differential and integral calculus in Banach spaces; 6.~Optimization problems; 7.~Operator equations and variational methods; 8.~Finite element and boundary element methods; 9.~Variational inequalities and applications; 10.~Spectral theory with applications; 11.~Frame and basis theory in Hilbert spaces; 12.~Wavelet theory; 13.~Wavelet method for partial differential equations and image processing; 14.~Wavelet frames; 15.~Gabor analysis. A rich appendix is devoted to important background material including elements of topology, Lebesgue integration, Fourier analysis. The material included in this book is of real interest for researchers working in pure and applied mathematics. However, in the reviewer's opinion, there are some problems with the language usage, such as the use of the singular when the plural is necessary, typos, and poorly phrased sentences. For instance (p.\,105), the dual of a normed space \(X\) is denoted by \((X^*)^{\star}\). Also, on p.\,42, the Euclidean space \({\mathbb R}^n\) is denoted in three different ways. I gave just a few examples but related inaccuracies can be found in several places of this book. In conclusion, I appreciate that the publisher should arrange to produce a comprehensive errata of this volume. See [Applied functional analysis.
