One of the main results of this paper is the following. Let \(A\) be a ring, \(S = A[X_0,\dots,X_r]\), and \(M = \bigoplus_{i=1}^p S\). Let \(N\) be a graded \(S\)-submodule of \(M\), generated in degrees at most \(d\). Let \(Q = M/N\) and assume \(n \leq d\). If the degree \(t\) component \(Q_t\) is locally free of rank \(n\) for \(t = d\) and \(t = d+1\), then \(Q_t\) is locally free of rank \(n\) for all \(t \geq d\). This can be viewed as a more general version of Gotzmann's persistence theorem, and it also generalizes a result of Gasharov. The author takes this point of view and obtains the result that the defining equations that give the embedding of a Quot scheme of points into a Grassmannian are given by a single Fitting ideal.
