Let \(M\) be a compact Riemannian manifold. If \(A\) is a self-adjoint elliptic partial-differential operator, then the eta function \(\eta(s,A)=\sum_{\lambda\neq0}\mathrm{sign}(\lambda)\dim\{\ker(D-\lambda)\}\) is a measure of the spectral asymmetry of \(A\). In the non-compact setting, the existence of continuous spectrum introduces difficulties. Thus, the author considers the setting where the operator in question can be realized as a field of operators (each having discrete spectrum) on a suitable parameter space and thereby creating a field of eta functions. The author applies this approach to the study of the Dirac operator on the universal cover of \(SL(2,\mathbb{R})\). One localizes at the representations in the principal series and in the discrete series. \S1 contains an introduction to the matter at hand. \S2 treats the spectrum of the localized Dirac operator on the universal cover of \(SL(2,\mathbb{R})\). \S3 deals with the eta function of the localized Dirac operator. \S4 presents some zeta functions. \S5 proves some results. \S6 examines spectral asymmetry and the eta invariant in this context.
