Let \(M\) be the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator. The maximal commutator of \(M\) with a locally integrable function \(b\) is defined by \[ M_{b}f(x)=\sup_{x \in Q}\frac{1}{|Q|}\int_{Q}|b(x)-b(y)||f(y)|\;dy \] where the supremum is taken over all cubes \(Q\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) containing \(x\). The first part of this paper is to study the boundedness of \(M_{b}\) when the symbol \(b\) belongs to a Lipschitz space \(\dot{\Lambda}_{\beta}(\mathbb{R}^n)\). The author gives some characterizations of the Lipschitz space via the boundedness of \(M_{b}\) on Lebesgue spaces or Morrey spaces. The second part of this paper is to study the boundedness of the commutator \([b,\;M]\) when the symbol \(b \geq 0\) belongs to a Lipschitz space \(\dot{\Lambda}_{\beta}(\mathbb{R}^n)\). The author gives some characterizations of the Lipschitz space via the boundedness of \([b,\;M]\) on Lebesgue spaces or Morrey spaces.
