The authors prove the continuity of global attractors for the following semilinear strongly damped wave equation, \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} u_{tt}-\Delta u -\Delta u_t-\varepsilon \Delta u_{tt}&=f(u) &\text{ in }(0,\infty)&\times \Omega,\\ u|_{\partial \Omega}&=0&\text{ in }(0,\infty)&\times\partial \Omega,\\ (u,u_t)|_{t=0}&=(u_0,v_0)&\text{ in } \{0\} &\times \Omega, \end{alignedat} \] where \(\varepsilon\in[0,1]\) and \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^ n, n\geq 3,\) is a bounded domain, and derive uniform bounds on their fractal dimension. The nonlinearity \(f\) satisfies the subcritical growth condition \[ |f(u)-f(v)|\leq c|u-v|(1+|u|^ {\rho-1}+|v|^ {\rho-1}),\qquad \rho<\frac{n+2}{n-2}, \] and the dissipativity condition \[ \limsup_{|u|\to\infty}\frac{f(u)}{u}<\lambda_1, \] where \(\lambda_1\) denotes the first eigenvalue of \(-\Delta\) with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The proofs are mainly based on techniques from functional analysis. The key observation is that the singularly perturbed problem with \(\varepsilon>0\) can be obtained from its limit \(\varepsilon=0\) by appropriately exchanging the unperturbed differential operator by its Yosida approximation. This fact, together with a suitable change of variables, is used to set the problem in a unified framework and to derive uniform results for \(\varepsilon\in[0,1]\).
