In this paper, the authors consider a particular class of weighted backward shifts on the sequence spaces \(\ell_p(\mathbb{N})\), \(p\geq 1\), which they call asymptotically unweighted shifts. They are of the form \[ B((x_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}})=((1+a_n)x_{n+1})_{n\in\mathbb{N}},\quad x=(x_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\in\ell_p(\mathbb{N}), \] where \((a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) is a sequence of positive numbers tending to \(0\) as \(n\) tends to infinity. Hypercyclicity and chaoticity properties are studied for this class of operators. The results obtained are particular instances of very well-known characterizations (see, for instance, [\textit{F. Bayart} and \textit{É. Matheron}, Dynamics of linear operators. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2009; Zbl 1187.47001)] and [\textit{K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann} and \textit{A. Peris Manguillot}, Linear chaos. Berlin: Springer (2011; Zbl 1246.47004)]).
