In [J. Algebra 324, No. 7, 1636--1655 (2010; Zbl 1211.14055)], \textit{L. Bădescu} and \textit{G. Valla} showed that the arithmetical rank of a rational normal scroll is the expected one in a remarkable paper. In the paper under review, the author extends this result to the case of a polynomial ring where the base ring is not necessarily a field. More precisely, let \(R\) be a commutative unit ring, consider an integer \(d \geq 2\) and the positive integers \(n_1,\dots, n_d\). Set \(N = d - 1 +\sum_{i=1}^d n_i\). The scroll ideal \(D\) is the ideal of \(R[X_{1,0},\dots,X_{1,n_1},X_{2,0},\dots,X_{2,n_2},\dots, X_{d,0},\dots,X_{d,n_d}]\) generated by the two by two minors of the following matrix: \[ A=\left(\begin{matrix} X_{1,0}&\dots&X_{1,n_1-1}\\ X_{1,1}&\dots&X_{1,n_1}\end{matrix}\right|\begin{matrix} \dots\\ \dots\end{matrix}\left| \begin{matrix} X_{d,0}&\dots &X_{d,n_d-1}\\ X_{d,1}&\dots&X_{d,n_d} \end{matrix}\right). \] The author explicitly gives \(N - 2\) homogeneous polynomials \(F_1,\dots,F_{N-2} \), such that \(D=\text{rad} (F_1,\dots,F_{N-2})\). The proofs are completely algebraic.
