The eigenfrequencies and stability boundary of one-dimensional or multidimensional systems of sufficiently large finite length can be determined by the asymptotic method of global instability developed by A. G. Kulikovskii. The article studies an elastic plate of finite size in an infinite gas flow. The Kirchhoff-Love model describes the motion of a plate. By means of the frequency equation, the paper studies global and one-sided instability and gives their physical meaning for systems of large length in the general form. The curve situated near the non-one-sided eigenfrequencies and the behaviour of the eigenmodes are analysed in the particular case of an elastic plate in a gas flow. Numerical analysis and comparison with asymptotic results are presented for an untensioned plate, the effect of tension on single-mode flutter and the boundaries of coupled flutter. Finally, the asymptotic method is presented for flutter of rectangular plates.
