In this very interesting paper, some necessary conditions for breakdown of regularity of the solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations are obtained, by using some particular initial data with vorticity in the intersection of two special Lebesgue spaces. This is an improvement of the previous result obtained in [the first two authors, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 49, No. 1, 131--167 (2016; Zbl 1342.35210)]. The blow up condition is given in terms of the \(L^p\) norm in time of velocity with value in a special Sobolev space. If the initial data are more regular, a previous restriction on the exponent \(p\) is dropped. An important point is to write the homogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in terms of two new unknowns: the vertical component of the vorticity and the derivative of the vertical velocity in terms of the vertical coordinate. The new element, mentioned on middle of page 873 is that ``the regularity of the solution is higher than the one given by the scaling of the equation''.
