The paper studies the Parisi variational problem for the Ising spin model. The authors establish necessary and sufficient optimality conditions on the first variation of the Parisi functional at a minimizing measure. Based on this result, the authors provide a comprehensive study of the boundary between replica symmetric and replica symmetry breaking phases.
