Let \((X,f)\) be a dynamical system given by a locally compact separable metric space \(X\) and a continuous map \(f: X\to X\). Let \(S(X)\) be the space of all continuous selfmaps of \(X\). The map \(f\) on \(X\) naturally induces a map \(F_f\) on \(S(X)\) by \(F_f(\varphi)=f\circ \varphi\) for any \(\varphi\in S(X)\). It is natural to consider the point-open topology (denoted by \(\mathcal{P}\)) on \(S(X)\). But it is shown in Theorem 2.1 that for any continuous map \(f: [0,1]\to [0,1]\), the induced system \((S([0, 1]),\mathcal{P},f)\) has no dense orbits. The authors proposes to study the point-open topology on a subset \(A\) of \(X\), denoted by \(\mathcal{P}_A\), which is the topology generated by the following collection: \[ \mathcal{S}_A=\{J(x,U): x\in A\;\mathrm{and}\;U\;\mathrm{is\;an\;open\;subset\;of\;}X\}, \] where \(J(x,U)=\{\varphi\in S(X): \varphi(x)\in U\}\). The space \(S(X)\) with the topology \(\mathcal{S}_A\) is denoted by \(S_A(X)\). This paper is devoted to studying the connection between properties of \((X,f)\) and \((S_A(X),F_f)\). It is shown that \((X,f)\) is weakly mixing if and only if there exists a countable dense subset \(A\) of \(X\) such that \((S_A(X),F_f)\) has a transitive point \(\varphi\in S(X)\) which is surjective; \((X,f)\) has sensitive dependence on initial conditions if and only if so has \((S_A(X),F_f)\) for every countable dense subset \(A\) of \(X\). As an application, the authors consider a class of one-dimensional wave equations with van der Pol boundary condition and show that if the boundary condition is weakly mixing, then there exists an initial condition such that the solutions of the equations exhibit complicated behavior.
